Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of the groundbreaking book, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma, recently spoke to a sold out audience of clinicians and community members as part of The Avielle Foundation’s Brainstorm Experience in Newtown, CT: a community that was deeply traumatized in 2012 after the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. Dr. van ker Kolk’s talk, fully featured here offers valuable information for parents and caregivers of traumatized or stressed young people. Well worth a watch. “The research showed that a biological marker of an infant’s ability to regulate stress was influenced not only by the amount of stress the child’s mother experienced during pregnancy but also by a mother’s life course experiences with stress.”
While caring for a child who has experienced trauma, it’s easy to become hyper-focused on the “trauma” and being “trauma informed” however, the child, as the boy in this story illustrates, is so much more than their trauma. A great, and perspective shifting read for parents and caregivers of children who have suffered trauma or adverse life experiences.
